The problems bioethics is called to solve also rise from the effects produced in society by all those compromises and political errors made by legislators in our recent past! Today bioethics is faced with an extremely hard task - placing limits especially to those goodies who, in order to appear extremely good produce only disasters, as we have often seen. The strange thing is that such consequences now appear daily in all their tragic aspect especially in the medical and scientific fields. The fact that scientific research always starts off with the purpose of supporting a human need and is at times later used with a boomerange effect against humanity itself has been ascertained. Consider the typical example of nuclear research begun by physicists looking for a form of alternative energy to oil and later used during World War II to produce the well known atomic bomb with its well known consequences. In the same manner that is not so bloody and the effect of which is not immediate but which has a great impact on numbers, due to the enormous number of “unborns” it has caused, let us say, that research performed to study female hormone malfunctions has been deviated to be used as a means of contraception, with anticonceptional pills. Even abortion, an important intervention technique in cases where serious malformations of the phetus are diagnosed or which involve serious risks for the mother, has been rivisited, becoming a tool to end an unwanted pregnancy, very often for trifling reasons. The subject matter for a heated discussion between science and bioethics is certainly not lacking - the mass media support it and fan the flames. They have now started and are supporting a campaign on another theme - euthanasia, which follows previous opinion polls on the pill and abortion. The demagogic reason of “not wanting the patient to suffer” is opening the way to introduce, euthanasia as self determination of death, following Holland’s example. The attack, when it is cut down to basic facts, is simple: deprive life of its values in order to justify one’s selfcentredness. It is ridiculous that the one to act must be the very doctor, who is called to take the responsibility personally - this is a further act of legally approved deresponsibilization of citizens and, to say it all, it is an act of cowardice. The data supplied by the ISTAT reveals that for many years Italy’s demographic growth was below zero and only this past year did it reach zero. Ans here is the paradox: the circle closes with euthansia, less births and more deaths - the equation perfectly re-establish the balance in numbers! We will thus have an army of the unborn and one of the willingly dead. Amen.
