Curriculum Vitae - Maurizio Vanelli - Maria Gugliotta

Maurizio Vanelli was born 57 years ago in Somma Lombardo (VA), Italy; he is full Professor of Paediatrics at Parma University, where he is in charge of the Regional Interuniversity Paediatric Diabetology Centre. His professional activity started in Parma, where he specialised in Paediatrics; subsequently, in Paris, he deepened his knowledge in the field of Endocrinology, in the Service d’ Endocrinologie de l’enfant et l’adolescent of Hopital St-Vincent-de-Paul (Prof. JC Job and Prof. JL Chaussain), and in Diabetology in the Service de Diabétologie infantile of Prof. H. Lestradet. His chief field of interest is Developmental Diabetes Mellitus in childhood. He represents Italy in the International Hvidore Study Group on Diabetes in Childhood, where he investigates, together with 20 colleagues from Europe, America and Japan, ways of improving the quality of life of children and teenagers suffering from diabetes. The attainments of his team in the prevention of ketoacidosis upon the onset of diabetes and in the study of occasionally detected hyperglycemias have become reference models for many Diabetology centres in Italy, Europe and North America. He is the author of 414 scientific papers, of a manual on Medical Emergencies in Paediatrics and of numerous booklets for diabetes self-control education. He edited the Italian edition of “Le diabète de l‘enfant” by PF Bougnères, J. Jos, J.L. Chaussain, Flammarion, Paris. In cooperation with Prof. Alberto Munari (J. Piaget’s successor) and Donata Fabbri from the Faculty of Psychology of Geneva University, he is investigating the possibility of using children’s drawings to facilitate communication between doctor and patient in Paediatric Diabetology medical settings.

Maria Gugliotta has a university degree in Psychology and a postgraduate specialisation in Developmental Neuropsychology and in Psychological Research Methodology. She operates in the field of Clinical Psychology in the Paediatric Clinics Hospital Unit of Parma University Hospital Maternal-Infant Department. She is lecturer in “Psychological Research and Data Analysis Techniques” as part of the Psychology course of studies held at Parma University. She is a team member of the Regional Interuniversity Paediatric Diabetology Centre in Parma.
