Giovanni Persico

Professor Giovanni Persico, born in Naples on February 25th 1943, graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Naples on December 12th 1967. In 1969 he was awarded a Ministerial Study Grant and went on to specialize in General Surgery, being awarded summa cum laude in 1972 and then summa cum laude in Thoracic Surgery in 1974. In 1970 he took up the post of Assistant Professor of Surgical Anatomy at the University of Naples. In 1973 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgical Operations to the Chair of Special Surgical Pathology and Propedeutic Clinics, II Medical School, University of Naples.In 1975 he became Assistant Department Head. In 1982 he was appointed Associate Professor of General Surgery, teaching in one of the Official Courses of General Surgery and in several Postgraduate Schools of the II Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.In 1983 he was one of the teachers of the Research Doctorate Program in Microsurgery and a member of its Board of Teachers. He was also editor-in-chief of the magazine Microsurgery. In 1985 he was appointed Full Professor of Microsurgery. From 1985 to 1988 Professor Giovanni Persico was intensively engaged in valuable teaching work in Oncological Surgery - in blood diseases, immune systems and neoplastic diseases. He was particularly active as a teacher in the Postgraduate Schools. Since the academic year 1987-1988, he has been Professor of General Surgery in the VI Year of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery. He currently teaches Surgery of the Digestive System in the First and Second Years of the Postgraduate School of Surgery of the Digestive System and Digestive Endoscopy; Surgical Anatomy of the Arm in the Postgraduate School of the Hand; Surgical Physiopathology in the Postgraduate School of Special Surgical Semiological Techniques and Surgical Physiopathology in the Postgraduate School of Geriatrics. He also teaches Microsurgery and General Surgery on in-service-courses for doctors.In July 1987 he was appointed Acting Head of the Division of General Surgery (former Surgical Clinics). In 1988 he was appointed Full Professor of General Surgery and, in January 1990, he became the Head of VII Division of General Surgery and Microsurgery. Since 1990 he has been Coordinator of the Assistential Commission of the Faculty. In 1993 he became a Member of the Health Delegation of "Policlinico Azienda Federico II" and Chairman of a number of Commissions of the Delegation. In 1996 he was appointed Chairman of the V Division of General Surgery and Geriatrics (now called Functional Area of General Surgery and Geriatrics) , affiliate of the Assistential Department of General Surgery and Geriatrics, Operative and Diagnostic Endoscopy, of which he has been Director since 2000.
From 1997 to 1999 he was Director of the Institute for General Surgery and Gastroenterologic Sciences.
From March 1988 to July 2000 he was President of the Società Napoletana di Chirurgia (Neapolitan Society of Surgery). From 2000 to 2005 he was Director of the Postgraduate School in General Surgery of the University Department of General Surgery, Geriatrics and Advanced Technologies. He teaches Oncological General Surgery, Surgery of the Digestive System, Gerontology and Geriatrics in the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery and in the Postgraduate School.Professor Persico is a Member of the MIUR working group of the National Observatory on Specialist Medical Training. He is also a Member of the Regione Campania Commission for continuous medical training. He is President of the Italian Society of General Surgery and Geriatrics and a Member of the Italian Society of Technological and Computer-assisted Surgery and a Member of the Italian Society of Endocrinology and the Association "Leonardo di Capua". He is Consultant to the Publishing Committee of several medical journals: Microchirurgia e Scienze Chirurgiche, Italian Review of Medical and Surgical Research, Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Annali Italiani di Chirurgia. From June 2001 to December 2003, at the request of the Rector Magnificus of the University of Naples, he was Extraordinary Commissioner of the "Azienda Sanitaria Policlinico Federico II", Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Naples.
He is Chair of Centro di Eccellenza nell'Innovazione Tecnologica in Chirurgia " (Centre of Excellence for Technological Innovation in Surgery). On May 15th 2005 he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Naples.
The official appointment with D.R. n. 2708 was signed by Rector Magnificus, dated December 7th 2005, for the triennial academic period 2005-2008. Since 2006 he has been a member of a permanent panel, Campania Region and the University of Naples Federico II. On January 5th 2007 he was elected Member of the Comitato Scientifico dell'Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Scientific Committee of the Higher Institute of Health) by decree of the Minister of Health


Professor Persico is Member of the Commisione Policlinici at CRUI (Conference of the Rectors of the Italian Universities).
