Gianni Pezzoli

Born in Codogno (MI) on 11.02.1951. Director (first at the General Hospital and, later at the Milan School of Specialisation in Clinical Medicine - Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento di Milano) of today's main Italian centre for diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's Disease and related syndromes, since 1981. President of the Italian Association of Parkinsonians, which was promoted and founded by Prof. Pezzoli in December 1990. The Association currently numbers approx. 20,000 patient families. President of the Grigioni Foundation for Parkinson's Disease. The Foundation, which was decreed a moral institution in 1996, collects funds only for Parkinson's Disease. Scientific Coordinator, promotor and co-founder of the World Parkinson's Disease Association (WPDA) since December 1998. The WPDA is an international organisation of patient associations, which currently numbers countries in the five continents. Director of the Department of Neurosciences, Milan School of Specialisation in Clinical Medicine, from 1999 to 2002.
University Education
Graduated with honours in Medicine in 1975. Specialised with honours both in Neurology (1979) and in Neurosurgery (1990).
Experience
Performed many undergraduate internships in Italy, at the Institute of Pharmacology, at the Institute of Clinical Neurology, Neurology Department, S. Raffaele Hospital, Milan, and in various other Italian laboratories. Specialisation was followed by post-doctoral training in Prof. Stanley Fahnat's group "Movement Disorders", Institute of Neurology, Columbia University, New York, USA. 1989-1991 - Further study and research periods in the abovementioned American institute.
1991 - Study period at the Centre for Movement Disorders directed by Dr. Daniel Truong, Irvine University, California, USA, to learn botulin toxin local injection techniques for focal dystonia and laryngeal dystonia.
1983-1997 - Contracted Professor at the School of Specialisation in Neurology.
1998 - to date - Contracted Professor of Nutritional Science, University of Milan.
Memberships
Since 1982 - Member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
Since 1982 - Member of the Italian League against Parkinson's Disease and Extrapyramidal Diseases.
Since 1984 - Member of the American Parkinson Disease Association (USA) and, Director for Italy of the Association's publications, whose translations, publications and printing processes he attends to.
Since 1987 - Member of the American Academy of Neurology.
Since 1989 - Member of the Movement Disorders Society.
Since 1990 - Member and founder of the Network of European CNS Transplantation and Restoration (NECTAR), the first European group focused on brain transplantations and intracerebro-ventricular infusion of trophic factors for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.1999 - Awarded the Honour of Supreme Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.Author of many papers published in leading international and national reviews, congress abstracts, book chapters and patient literature.
